Know your races
Many punters know comparatively little about the various types of races and the horses which compete in them. Bookmakers get plenty of "sucker" money from fans who back a horse every time it starts.
The unskilled punter who "follows" a horse does so whether the animal is a stayer having a conditioning run in a sprint race, or whether he is out of his class in a weight for age race. Sometimes they may fluke a win to the annoyance of punters who make an informed choice.
Racing guides follow a fairly set pattern in New Zealand, Australia, and the United KIngdom. and There is no need for novice punters to learn all the conditions which govern certain events. Broadly speaking, there are races for two year olds, three year olds and events for older horses in the handicap and stakes classes.
When a horse works its way up the class ladder it's trainer will put him in a stakes race if its connections think it is good enough.
Two and three year olds get plenty of opportunities to run in stakes races; these are valuable races to win as they can enhance the breeding value of the winner and it's relatives.
Stakes races are at four levels, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, and LIsted with GRoup 1 being the ultimate. Many horses may not be up to Group 1 or two class but find Group 3 winnable. It is important for punters to do their homework to note these horses.
It is important for a punter to know the difference between sprint, staying races, and weight for age races. A backer has no one to blame but himself if he backs a six furlong horse in a middle distance event, or a stayer in a race for sprinters. And he has less excuse if he puts money on a mediocre galloper in a wfa race if the horse is meeting champions at level weights when in a handicap event he would enjoy a huge weight advantage.
Don't follow a horse blindly just because you won money off it in the past; if they appear to be out of their class (which can be checked from the form papers), let them run without making a bet.
